Recently, two of my best friends have seen God provide for them in pretty huge ways. One of them saw God provide for her to have a much-needed surgery without having to pay for it. Another has seen God pave the way for her to go back to school for her masters. Her path has been made very straight because she stepped out on faith and was obedient to do what God was telling her to do.
Both of these events have caused me to think about the way God provides for us. If you search the word "provide" on a Bible app, you see the many instances in Scripture where God supplied just what was needed at the exact right time. For Abraham, He provided a ram in the bushes (Genesis 22:1-19). He provides for the poor (Psalm 68:10). God provided a great fish for Jonah (Jonah 1:17). He provides a way out of temptation (1 Corinthians 10:13). He provided Nehemiah with favor with the King Artaxerxes so Nehemiah could go and begin the work on rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 2). There are many more examples of how God showed up right on time with just what was needed so His people would have what they needed or do what He wanted them to do. Most importantly, in the fullness of time, He sent Jesus. “He provided redemption for his people; he ordained his covenant forever— holy and awesome is his name.” (Psalm 111:9)
God doesn't just supply the big things we need. He also supplies the little things we need as well. “And my God will meet ALL your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”
(Philippians 4:19, emphasis mine) ALL your needs. Not just some. And it comes exactly when we need it. Not a minute before. Not a minute too late.
As I was thinking about the word "provision," I was breaking it down in its parts in my mind, trying to mine the riches contained in that word. "Pro-vision." I had a sort of silly thought that gave me a better understanding. With football season starting, I thought about "pro" in terms of "professional." (Yes, I know the prefix "pro" actually means before. Football season. I have a one track mind at the moment.) I think we can safely say that our God has "professional vision." He is so good at forseeing what we need when we need it that He's a pro at it! His preparations and plans for you are so perfect and so timely that He is the Master of provision. In fact, one of His names happens to be Jehovah Jireh, which comes from Genesis 22: “So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, 'On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.'” (Genesis 22:14) Since that happens to be His name, you can rely on His "professional vision" in your life!
