One Year Later

When I awakened this morning, Evan and Zach were lying on the couch - one on one end, one on the other. I picked Evan up to take him to the table for breakfast, and he pressed his cheek up against mine, which is how he shows love. We ate breakfast and laughed and talked the whole time. We discussed our trip to South Dakota this summer and how we would be traveling through several states before getting there. Zach excitedly showed me the map of South Dakota in his atlas, pointing out we would be traversing the whole bottom of the state. After breakfast, I dressed Evan as always and brushed his teeth. While we were doing that, I gave him extra kisses and played with him. It was a totally normal morning. Mundane, even. I was dreading picking up my phone this morning. Dreading what the memory for today would be. There was a picture taken a year ago today that still haunts my nightmares. March 20, 2017 was one of the most horrific days of my life. What the Preacher's Wife Does When She Doesn't Want to Go to Church

About a month ago, I went through a couple of weeks stretch where I didn't want to go to church. Both mornings I have wished one of my kids was sick so I could stay home in my yoga pants and watch football. This sounds shocking, I know. And I really don't know the reason other than the enemy has been hard at work in me. Despair and anxiety have both tried to defeat me. This thing with Evan's seizures really has me down. The enemy would have loved nothing more than for me to stop going to church. He would have preferred that I be at home, not hearing God's powerful word and not singing songs of truth that reminded my soul of how faithful God is. It would have been a victory for him if I had not gotten to have a long conversation with someone who has been visiting our church a couple of weeks ago or if I hadn't gotten to hug the neck of a lady who just lost a beloved husband. Words have escaped me since last Saturday. Last Saturday, I took Zach to a friend's birthday party, and by the time we got home, I was feeling sick. Really sick. Fever, chills, throat so sore I couldn't swallow. You guessed it - strep. I don't think I've ever had strep in my life. It was horrible. I felt horrible. It's the kind of horrible that you can't sleep because you feel SO BAD . That's where I was Saturday night. But being sick wasn't the only reason I couldn't sleep. As a pastor, sometimes one call can change the whole course of your day, let alone your week. We got one of those Saturday evening. One of our young church members had lost his life in a regatta race off the coast of Alabama. (Read about it here. ) To say it was a tragic death would be an understatement.
