Darkness

After a long and tiring day at church yesterday, we arrived home last night to find out we had no electricity. Apparently while we were in our missions and choir recognition service, it had stormed pretty severely and had caused some damage around town. We all had no idea since our church is very sturdily built and because there was music during the service. So in the total dark and sprinkling rain, we all tried to get in our house - which was difficult since the garage door wouldn't work, and there were no street lights.

While Zachary would probably wrestle a bear, he is a little afraid of the dark. He was somewhat freaking out over the fact that we had no lights. He went and found the first flashlight he could find. When we had all finally gotten in the house, I had turned on one of Evan's light-up toys so he would not be afraid. Yet I could tell both of them were slight unnerved by the whole thing. Finally I had a stroke of genius and remembered that we could check our electric company's website to see the estimated time when the power would be restored. It was going to be a good while, so we decided to put the kids to bed. Zach does have 3 days of school left, so sleep was important for him. He protested, as you can imagine. What about his "moon clock" that projects the moon on his ceiling? Certainly he couldn't go to sleep without that!

When we are in darkness, we search for some kind of light. We scramble to find something that will produce some sort of light - a cell phone, a toy, a candle. Out of habit, we try to flip a light switch for light, but it doesn't work. We can't stand the darkness. But when we finally find that source of light, it seems as if we can breathe again. There is only one thing that totally defeats the darkness, and that is Jesus Christ. He said of Himself in John 8:12, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John later proclaims that "God is light; in him there is no darkness at all." (‭1 John‬ ‭1‬:‭5‬ NIV) Do you want out of the dark? Are you scrambling to find something to light up your life? Do you want to breathe again? Come to the one who dwells in "unapproachable light." (1 Timothy 6:16) Come to Jesus.
